Icehotel
Each spring, blocks of ice are lifted from the Torne River and stored. By the following winter they have become a hotel. Icehotel has been rebuilt this way since 1989, in the village of Jukkasjärvi, north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland.
Artists from many countries design the art suites, so no two seasons look the same. Inside, the air stays a few degrees below zero. Guests sleep in thermal bags on reindeer hides. Icehotel 365, a permanent building kept cold all year, keeps ice rooms open through summer too, and warm rooms nearby cover the rest of the stay.
